6th Grade Media Literacy

Our goal with our 6th graders is to help them become independent users of Media Resources and to understand the basics of taking a critical look at web resources when using the internet for information.

6th graders start with the very basics....the parts of a book and the 5 important pages for learning....title page, copyright page, table of contents, glossary and index.

We learn where everything in our Media Center is locate, then briefly covering the Dewey Decimal system and how to find books on the shelves. (Many of our 6th graders come from schools without media specialists, and books are shelved by AR level.) Then we move into Destiny....the online data base used by all Lee County Public Schools.

One of our favorite activities is our Book Hunt, at the conclusion of Destiny. Everyone has a card with 6 different things to look for....some can be found by just going to the shelves, other things require using Destiny. It is so much fun to see them be successful and realize that they really do know how to find what they want in the Media Center. If they can use our Media Center, they understand the principles of using all libraries, which will help them be successful life-long learners.

We also spend time learning to take a critical look at webpages by remembering RADCAB....searching for R elevant information, A ppropriate (for middle schoolers), D etails, C urrent, A uthority and B ias. Taking a critical look at webpages often turns up on the FCAT.
